A segunda vinda

Girando e girando em seu grande círculo
O falcão não escuta o falcoeiro.
Tudo se parte, o centro não sustenta.
Mera anarquia avança sobre o mundo,
Marés sujas de sangue em toda parte
Os ritos da inocência sufocados.
Os melhores sem suas convicções,
Os piores com as mais fortes paixões.

From THE SECOND COMING

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all convictions, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

A ESCOLHA

O intelecto do homem é forçado a optar:
a perfeição da vida ou a perfeição do ofício;
Se escolhe a segunda precisa rejeitar,
Furioso e no escuro, um palácio tranquilo.

Quando a história termina, o que há a ser dito?
Com ou sem sorte, deixa suas marcas o açoite:
A velha perplexidade, o bolso vazio,
A vaidade do dia, o remorso da noite.

THE CHOICE

The intellect of man is forced to choose
perfection of the life, or of the work,
And if it take the second must refuse
A heavenly mansion, raging in the dark.

When all that story’s finished, what’s the news?
In luck or out the toil has left its mark:
That old perplexity an empty purse,
Or the day’s vanity, the night’s remorse.

UM AVIADOR IRLANDÊS ANTEVÊ SUA MORTE

Eu sei que terei meu destino
Em algum lugar entre essas nuvens;
Quem destruo não abomino,
E a quem guardo não quero bem;
Kiltartan Cross é meu país,
Os seus pobres a minha gente,
Nenhum fim a fará feliz,
E nem viver mais pobremente.
Por lei nem por dever eu luto,
Homens públicos, turba em júbilo,
O meu deleite é o meu impulso
A essas nuvens e esse tumulto;
Pesei tudo, e tudo pensado,
É perda de tempo o que aporte,
E perda de tempo o passado,
Perto dessa vida, essa morte.

AN IRISH AIRMAN FORESEES HIS DEATH

I know that I shall meet my fate
Somewhere among the clouds above;
Those that I fight I do not hate,
Those that I guard I do not love;
My country is Kiltartan Cross,
My contrymen Kiltartan’s poor,
No likely end could bring them loss
Or leave them happier than before.
Nor law, nor duty bade me fight,
Nor public men, nor cheering crowds;
A lonely impulse of delight
Drove to this tumult in the clouds;
I balanced all, brought all to mind,
The years to come seemed waste of breath,
A waste of breath the years behind
In balance with this life, this death.
